My Journey as a Watercolour Artist

Hello, and welcome! I’m so glad you’re here.

I’m Bev Bernic, a South African watercolour artist who finds joy in the delicate dance between water and pigment. Watercolour has always fascinated me with its translucent quality—the way it flows and blends unpredictably, just like life itself. Every brushstroke feels like a little adventure, whether I’m painting delicate florals, abstract landscapes, designing and painting unique cabochon pendants and greeting cards.

A Lifelong Appreciation for Art

While painting has not always been a part of my life, art has been everywhere around me for as long as I can remember. Since childhood I have always noticed it—in nature, in music, in the way colours interact. Music didn’t just move me emotionally; it painted pictures in my mind and still does so today. I can’t watch a movie without noticing the intentional or unintentional colour palettes in each scene, the way lighting creates mood, or how composition tells a silent story.

This love for artistic detail shaped my journey in many ways. For a number of years, I ran a niche couture cake design business alongside my vocal studio. My hand-painted cakes became highly sought after, blending my love of colour, texture, and composition into an edible art form that told each client's personal story. Though I once expressed my creativity through cake design, I now do so through watercolour—both mediums share that delicate interplay between precision and creative freedom.

A Glimpse into My Art

This piece captures the essence of my artistic style—loose, expressive, and inspired by nature’s effortless beauty. I love working with soft washes of colour, letting the paint take on a life of its own as it moves across the paper. There’s something magical about watching flowers bloom on the page, each one unique and unpredictable.

 

 

In contrast to the delicate florals, my atmospheric and abstract landscapes invite the viewer into places they never thought existed. These dreamlike terrains emerge organically, guided by the fluid movement of water and pigment. They capture the essence of unexplored worlds—silent, mysterious, and waiting to be discovered. I love working with soft washes of colour, letting the paint take on a life of its own as it moves across the paper.

I strive to create pieces that feel organic, fluid, and open to interpretation, allowing each viewer to connect with them in their own way. Painting is my way of expressing emotions and ideas that words often can’t capture. Through each watercolour piece, I aim to share a sense of tranquillity, joy, and inspiration.

Watercolour has always captivated me with its delicate balance between control and letting go. It’s an ever-changing flow—one where water, pigment, and brush merge in a way that feels both spontaneous and intentional. This balance has taught me so much about myself, and I continue to learn with each new painting.

Beyond the Studio

Outside of my art studio, I’m a vocal coach, helping others find their voice and reach their full potential. I’m also a wife, mother, and grandmother to six delightful humans who bring endless joy into my life. And if there were such a thing as a professional chocolate eater, I’d surely have that title too! 

I draw inspiration from the small things—the colours of a sunset, the rhythm of a song, the way shadows dance across a surface. Taking time to be grateful, finding joy in everyday moments and laughing…a lot, fuels both my art and my life. Life itself is a precious masterpiece, and I love capturing its fleeting beauty through my paintings.
